Tier 22 Vaults
Tier 22 vaults are for driveway, parking lot, and off-roadway applications subject to occasional non-deliberate heavy vehicular traffic (Trucks and larger vehicles).
For heavy vehicle traffic-rated vaults, the standard is typically based on AASHTO H-20 or HS-20 loading specifications, which are used for designing bridges and other structures subjected to vehicular traffic.
The load rating is critical in the handhole design, indicating the weight the enclosure can withstand. Traffic-rated enclosures are built to endure the weight and pressure vehicular traffic, making them ideal for roadways and busy urban areas. Non-traffic-rated enclosures are used in areas with pedestrian or no traffic, with significantly lower load requirements. Understanding the load rating is crucial for safety and longevity.
Load Ratings for Vaults
- AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials): This organization develops standards for highway and bridge design, including load ratings.
- H-20 and HS-20: These are specific load ratings used to determine the structural capacity of various components, including vault lids and other structures that may be subjected to vehicular traffic.
- ANSI/SCTE 77 is a performance specification to ensure the structural integrity of underground enclosures, and was updated in 2017
- Tier Ratings: ANSI/SCTE 77 uses a tier system to classify load ratings for underground enclosures, with Tier 5, Tier 8, Tier 15 and Tier 22 being the most common
- Tier 15: Driveway, parking lot, and off-roadway applications subject to occasional non-deliberate heavy vehicular traffic (standard passenger vehicles)
- Tier 22: Driveway, parking lot, and off-roadway applications subject to occasional non-deliberate heavy vehicular traffic (Trucks and larger vehicles)
- AASHTO H-20 (deliberate traffic, different specifications): deliberate vehicular traffic applications
- ASTM C857 and ASTM C858 are also used to design underground precast concrete utility structures
- ASTM C150 and ASTM C33 are used for cement and concrete aggregates
