Pulse suppressors or launch cables are used during OTDR testing. They allow the OTDR light pulse to settle down before it reaches the first connector of the cable under test so that the loss from that first connector can be measured and included in the test results. Using two pulse suppressors, sometimes referred to as a launch and receive cable, allows a more accurate measurement of the cable link under test. It allows the pulse to settle down prior to the first connector on the cable link to let the technician determine its insertion loss and back reflection (ORL). A receive cable placed on the far connector at the end of the cable is used to determine its insertion loss and back reflection.
